Meet the husband and wife duo who each created their dream business

Alicia Rountree signed to Model 1 at age 17. She has written a travel book about her native Mauritius and most recently launched her own eco-friendly swimwear brand. Alicia Swim’s idea was obvious that she had worn so many bikinis as a model and couldn’t find the exact right shape or print. , realized that there is a gap in the market for comfortable things. She was something she could wear, but her mother, her sister, and even her niece could wear.

What makes a great swimsuit? Feel confident in your own skin at all times and I believe a great swimsuit should feel like a second skin. It is the look and comfort that can be achieved by using a timeless design. It was all I wanted from Alicia Swim. I am happy that it has come true.

How did your experience as a model influence your work as a designer?Working in the fashion industry is like school, where you can meet and learn from different professionals. I didn’t study to be a fashion designer, but I’ve lived and seen how everything works behind the scenes.As a model, I have tried on thousands of different swimwear and documented which cut was the most comfortable and flattering. I also learned that there is When Feels good.

How do you design your prints and source your fabrics? I hand-paint all my signature prints in watercolor. Mauritius is my main source of inspiration, so naturally most of our prints were born during my visits to my hometown. Alicia Swim sources high quality recycled Italian fabrics reclaimed from fishing nets caught in coastal areas. Our resort accessories are made from a blend of cotton and silk and he uses 50% less water in the printing process. We use local production teams and local artisans as Mauritian craftsmanship is an integral part of our brand identity.

You’ve traveled a lot, what’s your favorite hidden gem? I have traveled a lot and been to some of the most amazing places in the world, but being from Mauritius, there is no place better than home. The only place where I really feel the same connection is Menorca, the fact that only 7% of the island is built is so rare that it feels disconnected from the rest of the world.

You are collaborating with LUX*, how do you approach the partnership? LUX* has started stocking my collection in the hotel. The hotel proved popular so I was asked to design a special print for the opening of her LUX* Grand Baie in Mauritius. I’ve known Paul Jones[CEO of LUX*]since I was born, so this collaboration is close to my heart!

What’s currently on your mood board? Bright colors! There are some flashy colors and new designs coming next summer. We’re also working on a new collaboration to create mom-daughter looks that are so much fun to imagine. was to create a collection for

How does sustainability affect your work? Growing up on an island surrounded by wildlife and the ocean, you naturally respect Mother Nature. Sustainable brand management has always been part of my identity and I know nothing else. This applies to my lifestyle, Alicia Swim, and all the projects I work on. . I only collaborate with brands that share my vision and want to work towards the same mission.

Arnaud Zannier, founder of the Zannier Hotels Group, opened Nonna Bazaar in a typical Menorcan farmhouse surrounded by 400 hectares of cultivated land. his inspiration? Childhood memories of family gatherings in the South of France and lively meals around long tables facing the Mediterranean Sea. The name ‘Nonna’ evokes sharing of family spirit, stories, memories and ancestral recipes, while ‘bazaar’ is a reference to the ‘bazaar’, the souks and markets that animate all the Mediterranean villages.

Why did you choose Menorca to launch Nonna Bazaar? I have been visiting Menorca for about 10 years now and have been looking for a place all over the island to make a hotel because I have fallen completely in love. As I spent more time there, I realized that I needed a new and modern restaurant concept based not only on the local but also on the Mediterranean culture. The rural lifestyle, farmlands and the Mediterranean have inspired us.

How has your experience in the hotel industry influenced Nonna Bazaar?Naturally, working in the hospitality industry for 10 years and launching 6 hotels on 3 different continents has given me a fair amount of experience and knowledge.

What is the perfect diet? For me, the perfect meal is a relaxing environment where you can spend time relaxing with close friends and family. We appreciate basic, simple and honest food with friendly yet professional service, as well as good entertainment and beautiful surroundings.

I read you have a “relentless attention to detail”, how does that translate to Nonna Bazaar? I believe that details are what make a product stand out. During the restoration of the farm where Nonna Bazaar is located, we had to be very careful not to destroy the energy and soul of the place. I tried to keep as much of the patina, flooring and old doors as possible.

What is your favorite dish on the menu and why? I love the ‘cochiniro asado’, a specialty of our farm where my team is committed to raising the best pigs on the island. I also love Moroccan pastilla. It reminds me of my childhood as I used to travel to Marrakech every year.

You said you need passion to succeed in business, why are you so passionate about this project? Yes, I am always passionate about every project I start. I love creating concepts and finding new places for others to enjoy.
